8. Introduction
The Syro Malabar Church is hailing from the preaching of St. Thomas the Apostle. Up to the coming of the western missionaries, the Church was known as the Church of St. Thomas Christians. There are also authors who have called this Church by the name the Chaldean Church of Malabar.
9.
This Liturgy has taken shape after the model of the Jewish Synagogual liturgy complemented with the celebration of the mystery of Christ from incarnation to the second coming, by adding the New Testament readings and the celebration of the Passover of the Lord – His passion, death and resurrection – sealed by the gift of the Spirit.
10.
It has structural and substantial similarity with the liturgy of the East Syrian Church – both Chaldean and Assyrian. This is due to the hierarchical communion that existed up to the 16th century. The Anaphora of the liturgy is attributed to Sts. Addai and Mari, acclaimed as disciples of St. Thomas and is the earliest Anaphora come down to us.
11.
The expressions of praise, glorification, adoration and thanks giving are interwoven with the basic sense of unworthiness run through the whole celebration.
12.
The name of the liturgy is Qurbana. This Syriac word means the offering of Christ and of ours to God the Father in the Holy Spirit. Let us enter into this celebration of the mystery of Christ, the source and continued experience of our communion with Christ in the Church.

From there he set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice, but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet.
47.
Now the woman was a Gentile, of
Sy-ro-phoe-ni’ci-an origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. He said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” But she answered him, “Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”
48.
